Welcome back, or for the very first time, to the Back Lot 605 podcast! As we enter week three of our Francis Ford Coppola month, we take a look at Coppola’s war epic from 1979, Apocalypse Now! We are joined by one of our favorite people in the world, the one and only Cory Jacobsen (you know that guy from Somewhat Random Movie Collection on Instagram and the co-host of This Movie’s History). Cory joins us to break down all three cuts of Apocalypse Now, including the Redux and Final Cut versions. We also take a look at this week’s box office results and some movie news from the past week.
Apocalypse Now is co-written by Coppola and John Milius and is based on the novella Hearts of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The film follows U.S. military Captain Willard as he embarks on a journey to Vietnam to terminate deserted Colonel Kurtz of the U.S. Army, who has gone insane believing himself a prophet. The film stars Martin Sheen as Willard, Marlon Brando as Kurtz, and co-stars Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford.
The Box Office
Godzilla vs Kong remains atop the box office with a $7.71 million third weekend. The rest of the box office had only a slight dip from last week, including Nobody at number two with $2.52 million. The Unholy remains at number three with just over $2 million. Coming in at just under $2 million is Raya and the Last Dragon. Rounding out the box office once again is Tom & Jerry with $1.09 million.
The News
As previously reported on the podcast, Universal’s Dracula spinoff Renfield continues pre-production with a slight change behind the camera. The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay has replaced Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) on the project. In casting news, The King of Staten Island star Pete Davidson is set to star and co-write I Slept with Joey Ramone. The SNL star will adapt the novel and star as famed punk rock icon Joey Ramone in this Netflix-produced biopic.
