Born on the Fourth of July Spotlight

Welcome to Episode 89 of the Back Lot 605 Podcast! We continue our Patriotic Films mini-series with the 1989 biographical war, drama Born on the Fourth of July. Based on the autobiography by Ron Kovic, the film stars Tom Cruise as Kovic, a disabled veteran of the Vietnam war. Directed by Oliver Stone, the film follows Kovic and his recovery from the war and eventual political activism that followed. This is our spotlight on Born on the Fourth of July.


The News

The saga that is the release date of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has reached a crescendo. Warner Bros. announces that the blockbuster epic will see a delay indefinitely. This comes on the heels of nearly every major release for 2021 pushing back it’s release until next year, or moving to streaming.

The Olivia Newton John and John Travolta classic Grease is getting a prequel. Summer Loving will take place months before the original film, and is will be directed by Brett Haley (Hearts Beat Loud).

John Hamm will take on the titular role of Fletch. This is a remake of the Chevy Chase comedy classic. Superbad director Greg Mottola is set to direct the film. No word yet on a possible release date.

Ben Stiller has opted the Stephen King short story Rat to potentially direct and star in. Rumor is Stiller will take on the lead of this film, centered around a struggling writer. He is also in the works to direct the picture as well.

Netflix has entered in the bid budget franchise game with the announcement of The Gray Man. Joe and Anthony Russo are set to direct this $200 million film. It stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. This espionage thriller is meant to be the start of a major franchise for the service.

In other Netflix news, we get our first look at the Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon Levitt starring film Project Power. The team behind Nerve and Paranormal Activity 3 are going to direct. The film hits Netflix screens this August.
