Coming Soon: April 2nd, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! This Easter weekend brings us a number of old and new Easter-friendly movies… but it also brings us the first certifiable blockbuster movie of 2021, and certainly the cinematic face-off of the year, hands down! Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of April 2nd, 2021:

Featured Title: Godzilla vs. Kong

It’s finally here: The culmination of Legendary’s “MonsterVerse” of movies, which began with 2014’s Godzilla and continued on through 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Now, you probably don’t need to know anything more about this movie besides “Godzilla fights King Kong”, but there is an actual plot! As King Kong sets out on a journey to find his new home, a super-mad Godzilla keeps getting in the way, and, well… they go mano y mano!

The stacked ensemble cast includes Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler (both returning from KOTM), along with new faces Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza Gonzalez, Julian Dennison, Demian Bichir, and Lance Reddick. Orchestrating all this chaos and destruction is director Adam Wingard, making his way into the realm of big-budget studio blockbusters after directing such cult hits as You’re Next and The Guest. (Premieres Wednesday, March 31st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, Century East at Dawley Farm and West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, and on HBO Max.)

New to Theaters

The Unholy

This Sam Raimi-produced horror movie follows a disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) who visits a small New England town to see a young hearing-impaired girl who can now hear, speak and heal the sick after supposedly being visited by the Virgin Mary. But, it’s not actually Mary… instead, it’s something much more sinister! Also starring Katie Aselton, William Sadler, and Cary Elwes, this is the feature directing debut of screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos (whose previous scripts include the 2017 Beauty and the Beast remake, 2019’s Charlie’s Angels reboot, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War). (Opens Friday, April 2nd in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls.)

The Girl Who Believes in Miracles

So now, what if the plot of The Unholy was turned into an inspirational Christian family drama? I kid you not, that’s what’s happening in theaters this Easter weekend! In this movie, when a girl prays to God, she begins healing animals and humans, receiving all sorts of media attention in the process. Starring Mira Sorvino, Peter Coyote, and Christian movie staple Kevin Sorbo. (Opens Friday, April 2nd in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls.)

French Exit

The final theatrical release for the weekend is this movie that was once rumored as a Best Actress awards contender, before that plan fell through. Michelle Pfeiffer stars as a socialite widow who decides to move to Paris when her husband’s fortune finally runs out. Joining her on this trip is her son (Lucas Hedges), who dumps his fiancée (Imogen Poots) to accompany his mom overseas… and her talking cat, which is the reincarnated version of her husband?!? Directed by Azazel Jacobs (The Lovers, Terri). (Opens Friday, April 2nd in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls.)

Concrete Cowboy

Idris Elba brings new meaning to the term “urban cowboy”, in this week’s Netflix original movie! This father/son drama is about a Detroit teen (Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger Things) who’s sent to Philadelphia to spend the summer with his estranged father (Idris Elba), who belongs to the real-life inner-city cowboy group The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club. Also starring Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, and Method Man, this is the feature directing debut of Ricky Staub (who also wrote the script). (Premieres Friday, April 2nd on Netflix.)

Cinema Falls Presents the Oscar Shorts!

Every year, Cinema Falls has worked to ensure that the Oscar-nominated shorts in all 3 shorts categories (Animated, Live-Action and Documentary) play on the big screen here in Sioux Falls! And this weekend, Cinema Falls is making it happen again, in the first event they’ve held since November! This year, the shorts will play at the newly-reopened West Mall 7 over the course of 3 nights: the live-action and animated programs will play back-to-back on Sunday, April 4th at 5:00 PM, and on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:00 PM. The documentary program will play one night only, on Monday, April 5th at 7:00 PM. But be warned: Only 50 people will be admitted each evening, for social distancing purposes… and tickets are selling quickly! For more information, head over to Cinema Falls’ ticketing web site!

Showing at the State!

Jesus Christ Superstar

The weekend’s other State selections are all Easter-themed… beginning with the feature film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice’s modernized reinterpretation of the story of Jesus! Directed by Norman Jewison (In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, and previous State selection Moonstruck). (Showing Friday, April 2nd and Saturday, April 3rd at the State Theatre.)

Hop

For the kids, the State is bringing in the 2011 Easter Bunny family comedy from Illumination (aka the Despicable Me folks). Russell Brand is the voice of E.B., the Easter Bunny’s son… who would rather become a rock-and-roll drummer than take on the family tradition. Also starring James Marsden and Kaley Cuoco; directed by Tim Hill (2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks). (Showing Friday, April 2nd and Saturday, April 3th at the State Theatre.)

Ben-Hur

The State also brings one of cinema’s greatest epic movies to town: the 1959 religious epic that won a record-setting 11 Oscars, including Best Picture! Charlton Heston, in his Best Actor-winning performance, plays Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince who’s sent into slavery by his friend Messala (Stephen Boyd). But he vows to get out and get revenge… culminating in the legendary chariot race sequence! Directed by William Wyler (The Best Years of Our Lives; previous State selection Roman Holiday). (Showing Saturday, April 3rd and Sunday, April 4th at the State Theatre.)

Clue

Finally, the State is presenting encore showings of the 1985 mystery-comedy based on the beloved board game, which was first shown as part of the theater’s April Fools Day Mystery Movie event! Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mull, Lesley-Anne Warren, Michael McKean, Eileen Brennan, and Colleen Camp are among the all-star cast of suspects! Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny). Of note: These screenings of the movie will feature the home video version of the movie, which plays all three endings back-to-back! (Showing Monday, April 5th at the State Theatre.)
