Coming Soon: August 7th, 2020

Welcome to another exciting, action-packed installment of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! As per usual, we’re rounding up all the info on this week’s new streaming and VOD movie premieres! Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of August 7th, 2020:

New Streaming and VOD Premieres

An American Pickle

Kicking off this week, we have the very first HBO Max exclusive original movie! Seth Rogen stars as a man who immigrates from Eastern Europe to New York in 1919 with his pregnant wife (Succession‘s Sarah Snook), in search of a better life. However, one day – and I assure you, I am not making this next part up – while Rogen is working at his new job at a pickle factory, he falls in a huge vat of pickle brine, and is perfectly preserved in said pickle brine until the vat is opened up 100 years later. Y’know… just as it would happen in real life. 😉 Thus begins all sorts of fish-out-of-water comedy shenanigans as Rogen adapts to modern-day life… and he ends up moving in with his great-grandson, an app programmer played by – you guessed it – Seth Rogen!

This is the directorial debut of Brandon Trost, who’s served as the cinematographer for many previous Rogen movies, including This is the End, Neighbors, The Interview, and The Disaster Artist. In addition, the movie is the first full screenplay written by Simon Rich, a longtime former SNL writer who went on to create the Jay Baruchel FX comedy series Man Seeking Woman and the Daniel Radcliffe TBS anthology series Miracle Workers. (Premieres Thursday, August 6th on HBO Max.)

The Tax Collector

Next up, we have the new movie from writer/director David Ayer, whom you might know best from his recent blockbuster efforts like Suicide Squad, Bright, and Fury. But before that, he focused exclusively on making movies centering around L.A. gangs, starting with writing the script for Training Day, and then going on to make movies like Harsh Times and End of Watch. Here, he heads back to his bread and butter, with this flick following 2 “tax collectors” (Bobby Soto and a very intense-looking Shia LaBeouf) for a local crime lord (Jimmy Smits). The movie also co-stars George Lopez, who’s cast against type in a very sinister-looking turn. (Premieres Friday, August 7th on VOD.)

She Dies Tomorrow

Just in time to make you paranoid during the COVID era, here comes a dark comedy with horror elements, following a woman (Amy Seimetz, who also wrote and directed) who becomes convinced that she’s going to die tomorrow. (Hey, that’s the title of the movie!) The catch, however, is that everyone she comes into contact with also starts thinking they’re going to die very soon. The ensemble cast also stars Jane Adams, Chris Messina, Michelle Rodriguez, Josh Lucas, and Adam Wingard. (Premieres Friday, August 7th on VOD.)

Disney+ goes serious this weekend, with a documentary on the late Howard Ashman, a key figure in the Disney animation renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s. With his creative partner Alan Menken, Ashman co-wrote the songs for Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, as well as some of the songs for Aladdin… all while fighting a personal battle with AIDS, of which he died from in March of 1991. In the end, Ashman won two Best Original Song Oscars for his work: for The Little Mermaid‘s “Under the Sea”, as well as a posthumous Oscar for the title song “Beauty and the Beast”. The documentary is directed by Don Hahn, who was the producer of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King (and who also made the excellent 2009 behind-the-curtain documentary on the Disney renaissance, Waking Sleeping Beauty). (Premieres Friday, August 7th on Disney+.)

Work It

It seems like we’re always talking about Netflix’s latest new teen rom-coms every week in this column… but this week’s Netflix teen flick ditches the kissing and aims more squarely for the Step Up crowd. Girl Meets World‘s Sabrina Carpenter plays a high school senior who auditions for her school’s dance squad to pad up her extracurriculars so she can get into the college of her dreams. But when the dance squad doesn’t let her in, she starts up a ragtag squad of her own! Directed by Laura Terruso. (Premieres Friday, July 7th on Netflix.)

La Llorona

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere… and despite the title, no, this is not last year’s Conjuring Universe movie! Instead, this film (which played at Sundance 2020) transposes the La Llorona legend to modern-day Guatemalan politics, as it follows a retired general who was responsible for a Mayan genocide decades ago – and who gets a fateful visit from the title character. Directed and co-written by Jayro Bustamante. (Premieres Thursday, August 6th on Shudder.)

Moonlight Movies: Back to the Future!

Great Scott! This weekend’s outdoor Moonlight Movie in Fawick Park in downtown Sioux Falls is the beloved 1985 time-travel classic Back to the Future, starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson, and Thomas F. Wilson. The movie screens this Saturday, August 8th, at dusk; for more information, check out the Downtown Sioux Falls web site.
