Coming Soon: December 3rd, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! After the bountiful feast of Thanksgiving movies, this weekend is much, much quieter… but we do have one of Netflix’s biggest awards contenders of the year to talk about, as well as more new holiday-themed movies! Here’s what coming soon for the week of December 3rd, 2021:

Featured Title: The Power of the Dog

Leading the charge this week is the streaming debut of the new Western from Academy Award-winning writer/director Jane Campion (The Piano), in her first film since 2009’s Bright Star! Set in 1925 Montana (with the stunning vistas of New Zealand – Campion’s homeland – substituting for the state), it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Montana rancher Phil Burbank, who offends an inn owner (Kirsten Dunst) and her son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) when he and his cattle drive group stops for a meal at her establishment. However, Phil’s brother George (Jesse Plemons) takes a shining to Rose, and eventually marries her… a move that Phil does not respond well to at all! I happened to check this movie out during its theatrical run at the State last week, and it contains great performances from all four leads (with real-life couple Dunst & Plemons’ chemistry shining through)… as well as some stunning plot reveals! Also starring Thomasin McKenzie, Keith Carradine, and Frances Conroy. (Premieres Wednesday, December 1st on Netflix.)

Opening in Theaters

Encounter

We’ve talked before in this column about how Cinemark has partnered up with Netflix for a number of pre-streaming theatrical releases… and now, Cinemark is doing the same with Amazon Prime, with this one-week advance theatrical run before it starts streaming on Prime on December 10th! Riz Ahmed (returning to the Amazon Prime fold after his Schmuckie-winning turn in last year’s Sound of Metal) plays a Marine who sets out on the road with his two young boys to protect them from an alien threat. Also starring Octavia Spencer and Rory Cochrane; directed by Michael Pearce (2017’s Beast). (Opens Friday, December 3rd in Cinemark theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls.)

New to Streaming and VOD

The Summit of the Gods

This week, Netflix is also offering up this French-language animated film, which played at Cannes (and which Netflix is hoping will find its way into the Best Animated Feature Oscar conversation! Based on a Japanese manga, about a Japanese photojournalist who becomes immersed in the world of mountain-climbing. (Premieres Tuesday, November 30th on Netflix.)

Single All the Way

Last year, Hulu garnered lots of chatter for their Kristen Stewart/Mackenzie Davis gay holiday romcom Happiest Season… and this year, Netflix is hoping to capture the zeitgeist with their similarly-themed comedy! A single man (Michael Urie) keeps getting pestered by his family about why he’s not in a committed relationship… so he recruits his best friend (Philemon Chambers) to pretend to be his boyfriend when he heads home for the holidays! Also starring Kathy Najimy, Jennifer Coolidge, and Barry Bostwick. (Premieres Thursday, December 2nd on Netflix.)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid book-turned-movie series has been a steady moneymaker for 20th Century Fox, as they’ve made four live-action movies between 2010 and 2017. Now that Disney has acquired Fox, they’re setting out to reboot the franchise… this time, in the animated space! Written by book author Jeff Kinney, and directed by veteran Simpsons/Futurama director Swinton O. Scott, this movie takes the cartoon imagery of the books and expands it into a 3D-animated universe! With the voices of Brady Noon as Greg, Ethan William Childress as Rowley, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Greg’s dad Frank. (Premieres Friday, December 3rd on Disney+.)

The Advent Calendar

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: A paraplegic ex-dancer (Eugénie Derouand) receives an antique Advent calendar for her birthday… but the surprises contained within each day of the calendar have disturbing consequences! Written and directed by Patrick Ridremont. (Premieres Thursday, December 2nd on Shudder.)

Returning to Theaters

My Neighbor Totoro

Studio Ghibli Fest 2021 comes to an end this week, with what’s arguably the studio’s most beloved movie: the 1988 animated film about two young girls that interact with various forest spirits! The dubbed version will be shown on December 5th & 9th; the subtitled version will be shown on December 6th. (Showing Sunday, December 5th, Monday, December 6th and Thursday, December 9th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls.)

Showing at the State!

Die Hard

This week’s State slate is comprised entirely of holiday classics… and starting things off with a bang is the beloved 1988 GOAT action film! Bruce Willis stars as NYC cop John McClane, whose trip to his ex-wife’s office Christmas party in L.A. takes a dark turn when the office is taken hostage by a team of thieves… led by the delectably evil Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman in his very first movie role! Also starring Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald VelJohnson, William Atherton, and Paul Gleason. Directed by John McTiernan (PredatorThe Hunt for Red October, Last Action Hero). (Showing Wednesday, December 1st, Saturday, December 4th, and Sunday, December 5th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

The Holiday

On the flip side of the Christmas-movie coin, the State also welcomes the 2006 rom-com from writer/director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, It’s ComplicatedThe Intern). Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet play an L.A. movie trailer producer and a London newspaper columnist, respectively, who swap homes for two weeks during the holiday season. There, Diaz falls in love with Winslet’s book-editor brother (Jude Law), and Winslet is wooed by Diaz’s ex-boyfriend’s BFF (Jack Black)! Also starring Eli Wallach, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell, and a slew of celebrity cameos! (Showing Thursday, December 2nd and Saturday, December 4th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Last week, we got a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with 1988’s Scrooged… and now, we’re getting another beloved version of that tale! This 1992 retelling, directed by Jim Henson’s son Brian (in his feature directing debut), stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, who’s visited by the three Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future! (Showing Friday, December 3rd, Saturday, December 4th, and Sunday, December 5th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Back in August, Chevy Chase’s Clark Griswold first came to the State with a two-week run of the original National Lampoon’s Vacation from 1983… and now, the 1989 holiday threequel is lighting up the screen! This time around, Clark, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Rusty (Johnny Galecki) opt to stay home for Christmas instead of hitting the road… but when their extended family arrives at their Chicago home, the chaos is once again unleashed! Also starring Brian Doyle-Murray, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and – once again stealing the show – Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie! Directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik (Benny & Joon, 1998’s The Avengers). I must warn you, though: As of this writing, only a small handful of single tickets remain for all 3 showings… proving that Sioux Falls loves its holiday classics! (Showing Friday, December 3rd, Saturday, December 4th, and Sunday, December 5th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
