Coming Soon: February 4th, 2022

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! It’s finally here: the onslaught of big February theatrical releases… and speaking for myself, I’m incredibly excited for this weekend’s big pair of theater debuts! Here’s what coming soon for the week of February 4th, 2022:

Featured Title: Jackass Forever

I don’t know about you, dear reader… but for me, a Jackass movie is an event! And after several months of delays, the fifth big-screen Jackass endeavor is finally hitting theaters, ready to heal America with its singular brand of injury-based humor! The big catch this time is that this is the last Jackass movie for Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the crew, because they’re finally turning 50! (Time does fly!) In addition to Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, and the other regulars (save for Bam Margera), special guests in this go-round include Eric Andre, Shaq, Tony Hawk, Machine Gun Kelly, and Tyler, the Creator! Jeff Tremaine returns as director, as does hands-on producer Spike Jonze. (Opening in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, on Friday, February 4th, with preview showings starting at 7PM on Thursday, February 3rd.)

Opening in Theaters

Moonfall

Jackass isn’t the only piece of cinematic stupidity hitting theaters this weekend… because we’ve also got the latest disasterpiece from Roland Emmerich, director of Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and much more! This time ’round, the moon has been knocked from its orbit, and is hurling towards Earth! A ramshackle team must head into space to stop it… and in the process, they learn the moon’s shocking secret! Starring Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, Michael Pena, John Bradley, Charlie Plummer, and Donald Sutherland. (Opening in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, on Friday, February 4th, with preview showings starting at 6PM on Thursday, February 3rd.)

The Wolf and the Lion

With the massive gap in theatrical family films, we’re getting this smaller animal-themed flick, which has hastily assembled a nationwide release to fill the void! After her grandpa dies, a 20-year-old girl (Molly Kunz) rescues a wolf cub and a lion cub in the Canadian wilderness. Also starring Graham Greene. (Opening in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, on Friday, February 4th, with preview showings starting at 6PM on Thursday, February 3rd.)

New to Streaming and VOD

Book of Love

Amazon is debuting the first of their two original rom-coms this month, starring Sam Claflin as a stuffy English writer who heads to Mexico for a book tour when his novel becomes a surprise hit. However, when he arrives, he finds out that the translator of his book (Ver√≥nica Echegui) secretly rewrote his novel into a steamy romance! Hmm, I wonder if they’ll set aside their differences and fall in love… ūüôā (Premieres Friday, February 4th on Amazon Prime Video.)

Slapface

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: A lonely boy whose mother just died befriends a monster who lives in the woods! Written and directed by Jeremiah Kipp, adapting his 2018 short film of the same name. (Premieres Thursday, February 3rd on Shudder.)

Showing at the State!

Groundhog Day

For the second consecutive year, the State is commemorating the Groundhog Day holiday by bringing in 1993’s beloved comedy hit! Bill Murray stars as Phil Connors, a disgruntled TV weatherman who’s sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivity… only to find that he keeps reliving Groundhog Day over and over again! Also starring Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray, and – in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment – a super-young Michael Shannon! (Showing Wednesday, February 2nd and Sunday, February 6th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

The Mighty Ducks

Quack! Quack! Quack! A favorite of my childhood is coming to the State this weekend: 1992’s Disney hockey movie starring Emilio Estevez as Twin Cities lawyer Gordon Bombay, who – following a drunk driving incident – is sentenced to community service by coaching a local Pee-Wee hockey team! Also starring Joshua Jackson, Marguerite Moreau, Joss Ackland, and Lane Smith; directed by Stephen Herek (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure). (Showing Thursday, February 3rd, Saturday, February 5th, and Sunday, February 6th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

Drive My Car

In time for its likely Oscar nominations on Tuesday, February 8th, the State’s new release for this week is Japan’s highly acclaimed 3-hour drama, which won three awards at last year’s Cannes, and also just netted the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film! Hidetoshi Nishijima stars as a theater actor whose wife recently passed, and who takes up an offer to travel to Hiroshima to direct a stage production of Uncle Vanya… where he bonds with his young female driver (Toko Miura). Directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (in his second film of 2021, following Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy). (Showing Friday, February 4th, Saturday, February 5th, and Wednesday, February 9th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

Hidden Figures

Finally, the State is kicking off its 2022 Black History Month series with a recent crowdpleaser: The 2016 drama about three real-life female African-American mathematicians (Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae) who worked as NASA during the early-1960s Space Race! Also starring Kevin Costner, Jim Parsons, Kirsten Dunst, and Mahershala Ali; directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent). (Showing Saturday, February 5th and Sunday, February 6th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
