Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! I’m not gonna lie: There is a lot of random stuff and under-the-radar stuff dropping this week… so without further ado: Here’s what coming soon for the week of January 21st, 2022:
Featured Title: Redeeming Love
This week’s big theatrical release is an adaptation of the 1991 faith-based romance novel, directed by an unlikely source: D.J. Caruso, who gave us the Shia LaBeouf star vehicles Disturbia and Eagle Eye, and who most recently helmed 2017’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage! (Not making this up!) Set during the 1850 California Gold Rush, this movie is about a woman who was sold into prostitution as a child (Abigail Cowen), and who meets a hunky farmer (Tom Lewis) who gives her a chance to redeem her life! Also starring Nina Dobrev, Eric Dane, Famke Janssen and Logan Marshall-Green. (Opens Friday, January 21st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 7PM on Thursday, January 20th.)
Opening in Theaters
The King’s Daughter
Also opening in theaters is a movie that, I’ll admit, I had never heard of until my local Cinemark theater had posted ticket presales! (That’s a good sign, right?) 🙂 This is a family fantasy adventure starring Kaya Scodelario as the illegitimate daughter of King Louis XIV (Pierce Brosnan), who befriends a mermaid (Fan Bingbing)! Fair warning, though: This movie was filmed EIGHT years ago, in the spring of 2014… and I can’t even recall the last time we had a movie that was filmed eight years before it opened in theaters! Also starring Benjamin Walker, Rachel Griffiths, and William Hurt, with narration by Julie Andrews (!!!); directed by family film veteran Sean McNamara (Soul Surfer, Bratz: The Movie, 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain). (Opens Friday, January 21st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 4PM on Thursday, January 20th.)
New to Streaming and VOD
Munich: The Edge of War
Netflix’s main movie offering this weekend is this exercise in pre-WWII suspense! In 1938, a British civil servant (“1917’s” George Mackay) is sent to Munich to retrieve a document from his old schoolmate (Jannis Niewöhner), who’s now a diplomat for the Germans! Also starring Jeremy Irons. (Premieres Friday, January 21st on Netflix.)
The Last Thing Mary Saw
Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: In 1843 New York, after the matriarch of a fervently religious family dies, a young woman (Stefanie Scott) recounts her relationship with the family maid (Isabelle Fuhrman) tore her family apart. Also starring Rory Culkin; written and directed by Edoardo Vitaletti. (Premieres Thursday, January 20th on Shudder.)
Returning to Theaters
This weekend is the kick-off of the 2022 TCM/Fathom Events anniversary film series… and they’re starting things off with a big one: the 1942 Humphrey Bogart/Ingrid Bergman wartime romance, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary! (Showing Sunday, January 23rd and Wednesday, January 26th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls.)
Showing at the State!
The Tragedy of Macbeth
Last week, Sioux Falls moviegoers came out in droves to see Joel Coen’s new take on the Shakespeare play at the State… and due to the popular demand, an extra screening has been added this Saturday morning at 11:00 AM! Don’t miss your last big-screen chance to see Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand in this visually dazzling adaptation! (Showing Saturday, January 22nd at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
The State’s weekly slate of new movies kicks off with Steve Martin’s iconic star turn, as a naive man who journeys from his rural home to the big city to make a name for himself! Also starring Bernadette Peters and Jackie Mason; directed by Carl Reiner, in the first of his many movie team-ups with Martin (which later included Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and All of Me). (Showing Wednesday, January 19th, Saturday, January 22nd, and Sunday, January 23rd at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
On the Waterfront
The State’s first Criterion Collection presentation of 2022 is Elia Kazan’s 1954 drama, starring Marlon Brando as dockman Terry Malloy, who ends up squaring off against the union! Also starring Eva Marie Saint, Lee J. Cobb, and Karl Malden. (Showing Thursday, January 20th and Sunday, January 23rd at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
Another beloved comedy coming to the State this weekend: Whoopi Goldberg’s 1992 blockbuster, in which she plays a Reno lounge singer who witnesses a mob murder… and ends up hiding out in a convent! Also starring Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, and Harvey Keitel; directed by Emile Ardolino (Dirty Dancing). (Showing Friday, January 21st, Saturday, January 22nd, and Sunday, January 23rd at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
Finally, the State is bringing us a nun movie of a much, much different sort: The brand-new flick from director Paul Verhoeven (RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct), which is making its Sioux Falls theatrical premiere! It’s about a 17th-century Italian nun (Virginie Efira) who begins seeing visions of Jesus… and who also ends up having an affair with a fellow nun in the process. (Showing Friday, January 21st and Sunday, January 22nd at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
