Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! If you thought last week was quiet, this week is even more so… thanks largely to the fact that there are zero new theatrical releases coming out! But we’ve still got a handful of streaming titles to highlight in the meantime! Here’s what coming soon for the week of January 28th, 2022:
Featured Title: Home Team
Believe it or not, but it’s been 15 months since the last Happy Madision Production, Hubie Halloween, dropped on Netflix! And while Adam Sandler himself has a couple of star vehicles due later this year (Hustle and Murder Mystery 2), he’s giving a bunch of his friends their own Netflix movie to fill the gap: This family sports comedy that’s loosely based on true events! Kevin James plays real-life New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, who was suspended by the NFL for the 2012 season as part of the team’s bounty scandal. To bide his time, he ended up spending his time coaching his 12-year-old son’s Pop Warner football team. Joining James in this movie are several other Sandler buddies, including Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, and Jackie Sandler (Adam’s wife). (Premieres Friday, January 28th on Netflix.)
New to Streaming and VOD
HBO Max’s latest original movie is this teen drama which premiered at 2021’s South by Southwest festival. It follows two high school girls (Jenna Ortega; Maddie Ziegler) who form a close bond after they ended up trapped in a bathroom during a school shooting. Also starring John Ortiz, Julie Bowen, and Shailene Woodley; directed by Megan Park (her feature directing debut), with a score by Finneas O’Connell (whom you best know as the brother of Billie Eilish). (Premieres Thursday, January 27th on HBO Max.)
The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild
This week, Disney+ continues its recycling of Fox IP, with this feature film spinoff of the long-running Ice Age franchise! As the title hints, Simon Pegg returns as Buck Wild; he ends up on a rescue mission to save opossum brothers Crash & Eddie. Both of those characters are voiced by new actors… and as far as I can tell, Pegg is the only veteran from the Ice Age series who’s actually reprising his role here, so now you know! (Premieres Friday, January 28th on Disney+.)
What if Adrien Brody had his own late-period-Liam-Neeson-like revenge-filled action flick? Well, you can find out on VOD this weekend! Brody (who also produced and co-wrote this movie!) plays a weathered garbageman with a mysterious, yet violent past… a past that comes throttling back to life when he crosses paths with a local crime boss. Directed and co-written by Paul Solet (2009’s Grace; Bullet Head). (Premieres Friday, January 28th on digital VOD services.)
Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster
Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: A documentary on the life and legacy of the legendary horror actor, featuring new interviews with Guillermo Del Toro, Ron Perlman, Roger Corman, John Landis, Joe Dante, Leonard Maltin, the late Peter Bogdanovich and Christopher Plummer, and more (Premieres Thursday, January 27th on Shudder.)
Showing at the State!
Dead Poets Society
Carpe diem! Seize the day! Robin Williams stars as unorthodox English teacher John Keating, in the State’s staff pick presentation of the 1989 prep school drama from Peter Weir (Witness, The Truman Show). Also starring Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Kurtwood Smith. (Showing Wednesday, January 26th and Sunday, January 30th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
As part of Sioux Falls Winter Pride week, the State and Sioux Falls Pride are bringing in this 1995 Spielberg-produced comedy, starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo as three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip to L.A. for a national drag competition… only to have their car break down in a small Midwestern town. Also starring Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Chris Penn, Melinda Dillon, and (in a cameo role) Robin Williams. (Showing Thursday, January 27th and Saturday, January 29th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
For the kids, the State is bringing in the beloved 2001 fairy-tale comedy, which won the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature! Mike Myers stars as the titular ogre, with Eddie Murphy as the scene-stealing Donkey (“I’m making waffles!”), Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad. (Showing Friday, January 28th, Saturday, January 29th, and Sunday, January 30th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
Finally, we have the State’s weekly new release: the Whiplash of rowing movies! Isabelle Fuhrman (from Orphan and its upcoming prequel Orphan: First Kill) stars as a college freshman who joins the school’s rowing team… and who stops at nothing to make the varsity roster. Written and directed by Lauren Hadaway. (Showing Friday, January 28th, Saturday, January 29th, and Sunday, January 30th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
