Coming Soon: January 7th, 2022

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! This January is shaping up to be an especially quiet movie month following the hustle and bustle of December… but the movies aren’t completely stopping, as you’ll see below! Here’s what coming soon for the week of January 7th, 2022:

Featured Title: The 355

The first theatrical wide release of 2022 is this Jessica Chastain pet project, which was originally supposed to be released in January 2021. Chastain (who also produced the movie) stars as a CIA agent who assembles an international team of female agents to retrieve a top-secret weapon… including a rival German agent (Diane Kruger), an MI-6 tech wiz (Lupita Nyong’o), and a Colombian psychologist (Penelope Cruz). Also starring Fan Bingbing, Edgar Ramirez, and Sebastian Stan, this movie is directed and co-written by Simon Kinberg, whom Chastian previously worked with on 2019’s Dark Phoenix. (Opens Friday, January 7th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 7PM on Thursday, January 6th.)

New to Streaming and VOD

The Tender Bar

It’s been barely a year since George Clooney’s last stint in the director’s chair – December 2020’s Netflix flick The Midnight Sky, which garnered a Visual Effects Oscar nomination – and yet, here he is again, with another awards contender for another streaming service! (This movie premiered in select theaters just before Christmas, hence why it qualifiers for this awards season.) This coming-of-age drama is about a fatherless boy from Long Island (Tye Sheridan) who’s brought up by his bartender uncle (Ben Affleck), and who sets his dreams on becoming a professional writer. Also starring Lily Rabe and Christopher Lloyd. (Premieres Friday, January 7th on Amazon Prime Video.)

National Champions

In this column’s efforts to provide as large an overview of new movies as possible, here’s a movie that opened in theaters nationwide on December 10th, but which missed South Dakota entirely… and now that it’s available on premium VOD, we’re covering it here! This all-star sports drama chronicles a college football team (led by coach J.K. Simmons) who’s about to play in the national championship game… until their star quarterback (Stephan James) starts a players’ strike to draw attention to how colleges are profiting off of their student athletes. The cast also includes Alexander Ludwig, Lil Rel Howery, Tim Blake Nelson, David Koechner, Jeffrey Donovan, Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, and Uzo Aduba. Directed by frequent Gerard Butler collaborator Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has FallenGreenland). (Premiered Tuesday, December 28th on digital VOD services.)

For the Sake of Vicious

Usually, we call out Shudder’s weekly movie premiere in this column… and as a special 2022 kickoff gift, we have two Shudder premieres to cover this week! First up: a nurse (Lora Burke) returns home from a late shift, only to find a maniac and his hostage in her home… and they must face off against a herd of other violent intruders! Directed by Gabriel Carerr and Reese Eveneshen. (Premieres Thursday, January 6th on Shudder.)

Woodlands Dark & Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror

Also debuting on Shudder this week is this 3-hour-plus documentary on folk horror, covering its start with the seminal films Witchfinder General, Blood on Satan’s Claw, and The Wicker Man (all of which premiered on Shudder at the beginning of the month), and going all the way to the present day! This contains clips from over 200 movies and over 50 interviewees, from Blood on Satan’s Claw director Piers Haggard to The Witch director Robert Eggers! (Premieres Monday, January 10th on Shudder.)

Showing at the State!

Red Rocket

The State continues its streak of bringing exclusive new releases to the Sioux Falls area, with this new comedy-drama from director Sean Baker (Tangerine, The Florida Project). MTV VJ/actor/rapper Simon Rex stars as a washed-up porn star who returns to his Texas hometown… only to find that nobody really wanted him to come back in the first place! (Showing Thursday, January 6th, Friday, January 7th, Saturday, January 8th, and Sunday, January 9th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

Valentine Crush

Also playing this week is the locally-made roller derby horror movie Valentine Crush, which premiered at the Orpheum in Sioux Falls this past August! Of note is that there will be a live in-person Q&A following Friday’s showing, with friend of the show Andy Heller (of Fat Dude Digs Flicks) interviewing director Jamie Wede and writer Leah Simmons! And be sure to check out our own interview with Wede & Simmons on this very site! (Showing Friday, January 7th, Saturday, January 8th, and Sunday, January 9th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

The Sound of Music

Back by popular demand this week is the classic 1965 family musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which sold out its showings on Christmas weekend to become one of the State’s most popular movies of 2021! Directed by Robert Wise (West Side StoryThe Day the Earth Stood Still). (Showing Wednesday, January 5th and Saturday, January 7th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)

The French Dispatch

Also back by popular demand this week is Wes Anderson’s new anthology comedy, which also brought in big crowds to the State during Christmas weekend. Starring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Jeffrey Wright, Owen Wilson, Benicio del Toro, Lea Seydoux, Timothee Chalamet, Adrien Brody, and many more! There’s only one showing happening (on Sunday afternoon), so don’t miss your chance! (Showing one day only, Sunday, January 8th at the Sioux Falls State Theatre.)
