Coming Soon: January 8th, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! As 2021 continues to start up, we’ve got another light lineup this week. But we do have a handful of movies debuting on streaming services (including one legendarily lost film), plus another fun roster of movies playing at the State Theatre! Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of January 8th, 2021:

Featured Title: Pieces of a Woman

As you may be aware, the Oscars has extended the 2020 eligibility period December 31st to February 28th of this year. Because of this, Netflix is still unveiling their critical contenders throughout the first two months of 2021. Kicking things off is this big film festival hit, which won Best Film at Venice several months ago. Vanessa Kirby (of Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Hobbs & Shaw fame) plays a pregnant Boston woman who copes with grief after she loses her baby during an at-home birth. (Said birth opens the movie, depicted in a single grueling 23-minute take!) Shia LaBeouf plays her husband; also starring Ellen Burstyn, Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, and Uncut Gems‘ Benny Safdie. Directed by Kornél Mundruczó (White God). (Premieres Friday, January 8th on Netflix.)

New to Streaming and VOD

Grizzly II: Revenge

Next, we have one of moviedom’s infamous lost films, which is finally getting an official release after 37 years in the making! As the title infers, this is a sequel to 1976’s Grizzly, and it follows a massive grizzly bear who attacks various folks in a national park, ultimately finding its way to a rock concert! The movie’s full behind-the-scenes story is insane and well worth the read, but to summarize: This was filmed in Hungary way back in 1983, but was never completed, due to various financial issues (including a producer who disappeared on the first day of production, and hasn’t been seen since!).

Part of the movie’s reputation comes from its opening scene, which features super-early acting turns by George Clooney, Laura Dern and Charlie Sheen as a group of young’uns who become the grizzly bear’s first kills. Also starring in this movie: Louise Fletcher in the standard “mayor from Jaws” role, and John Rhys-Davies (then fresh off of Raiders of the Lost Ark) as an insane grizzly hunter! (Premieres Friday, January 8th on VOD services.)

Herself

This week, Amazon gives us this Irish drama about a mom (Clare Dunn, who also co-wrote the script) who leaves her abusive husband and takes her two kids with her. Now on her own, the mother decides to build her own house for them to live in. The movie also stars Ian Lloyd Anderson and Conleth Hill. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!, The Iron Lady). (Premieres Friday, January 8th on Amazon Prime.)

Charming

Next, we have the latest Netflix “original” animated movie, which was actually released internationally way back in 2018!! It stars Fez himself, Wilmer Valderrama, as the voice of Prince Charming. He must choose which of three legendary fairy tale characters he must marry: Snow White (Avril Lavigne), Cinderella (Ashley Tisdale), or Sleeping Beauty (G.E.M.). But he ends up finding his soulmate instead: an adventurous girl (Demi Lovato) who’s disguised as a man?!? Also featuring the voices of Nia Vardalos, Sia, and – Monty Python alert!!! – John Cleese as The Fairy Godmother. (Premieres Friday, January 8th on Netflix.)

Showing at the State!

West Side Story

Leading this week’s batch of movies at the Sioux Falls State Theatre is the beloved 1961 musical West Side Story, which won 10 Oscars including Best Picture. With Steven Spielberg’s much-anticipated remake due this December, why not rewatch the original so you’re ready? Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, and Russ Tamblyn star… as well as Rita Moreno and George Chakiris in their Oscar-winning roles. Directed by Robert Wise (The Sound of Music; The Day the Earth Stood Still) and Jerome Robbins, who won Best Director Oscars for this movie as well. Fun fact: West Side Story actually made its Sioux Falls debut at the State, back in October of 1962! (Showing Friday, January 8th through Sunday, January 10th at the State Theatre.)

Mad Max

Next up at the State is the first entry in one of Back Lot’s most beloved action franchises! Yes, it’s George Miller’s original 1979 Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson in his breakout role! Also starring Joanne Samuel, Steve Bisley, and, as Toecutter, the recently-passed Hugh Keays-Byrne… who, if you didn’t know, also played Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road! And for those of you who are afraid that we’ll get Mel’s dubbed voice here, the State has confirmed that they’ll be showing the original Australian version. (Showing Thursday, January 8th and Sunday, January 10th at the State Theatre.)

First Cow

Finally, the State is bringing in one of critics’ favorite films of 2020… which completely bypassed Sioux Falls theaters last year thanks to COVID. Set in 1820 Oregon Country, this drama follows a cook and a Chinese immigrant who find financial success by stealing milk from a local wealthy man’s cow and baking goods with it. Starring John Magaro, Orion Lee, Alia Shawkat, and the late René Auberjonois. Written and directed by Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women, Night Moves). (Showing Saturday, January 9th and Sunday, January 10th at the State Theatre.)
