Coming Soon: July 24th, 2020

Guess what time it is? It’s time for this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! Yes, it’s our weekly look at what’s hitting streaming services, VOD, and in this week’s case… movie theaters? Say whaaaat?!? 🙂 Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of July 24th, 2020:

New Streaming and VOD Premieres

The Rental

Leading off the week is the highly anticipated feature directorial debut of Dave Franco… who has a long way to go in order to match the 39 (!!!) IMDB director credits that his brother James has. And while James has helmed projects ranging from documentaries to adaptations of classic novels to… well, The Disaster Artist, Dave is starting off his directing career squarely in the genre realm. Namely, this a horror/thriller hybrid, about two couples who rent a vacation home for a weekend getaway, only to realize that cameras have been recording every provocative move they’ve made… and they’ll do anything to get that footage back. The movie stars Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, and Toby Huss. (Premieres Friday, July 24th on VOD and in select movie theaters, including the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, which will have a preview screening on Thursday night, June 23rd.)

On the flip side of things, Amazon Prime is making a prestige play this weekend, with this biopic starring Rosamund Pike as famed chemist Marie Curie, who won a Nobel Prize for her discoveries on radioactivity… and ultimately died from radiation exposure. The movie also stars Sam Riley as her husband Pierre, and Anya Taylor-Joy as her daughter. Most notably, this movie is directed by Marjane Satrapi, who became famous writing the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, and went on to direct the animated feature film adaptation of that novel, garnering an Oscar nomination in the process. Since then, she’s stayed in the world of film, most notably directing the Ryan Reynolds horror-comedy The Voices. (Premieres Friday, July 24th on Amazon Prime.)

The Kissing Booth 2

One of Netflix’s emerging movie cottage industries is how they’ve managed to turn their teen rom-coms into full-blown franchises… first with the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy (!!!), and now with this sequel to 2018’s The Kissing Booth, starring Joey King, Jacob Elordi, and Molly Ringwald. This time around, high school senior Elle (King) and college freshman Noah (Elordi) try to have a long-distance relationship, now that Noah’s attending school on the opposite end of the country. But, that proves to be complicated… a plan further complicated by Elle’s college application process. Oh, and apparently, there are more new hot boys to distract Elle this time around, because of course. Vince Marcello returns as director and co-writer. (Premieres Friday, July 24th on Netflix.)

Animal Crackers

2020 has had its share of movies being dumped on VOD and streaming services after sitting on the shelf for several years… and this week’s Netflix animated premiere is no exception, having been finished all the way back in 2017! John Krasinski voices a man who inherits a run-down circus from his uncle… and discovers the secret to what made said circus a success: a box of animal crackers that can magically turn humans into animals when they eat them. Yes, that is the actual plot of this cartoon.

The only thing that may be more unbelievable than that premise is the sheer number of celebrities that lent their voices to this movie. Other cast members include: Emily Blunt, Danny DeVito, Harvey Fierstein, Wallace Shawn, Patrick Warburton, Gilbert Gottfried, Raven-Synome, Ian McKellen (as the villain), and Sylvester Stallone as “Bullet-Man”, a man who’s been shot out of a cannon so many times that he can only say his own name. (Hilarious!) The movie is directed by Tony Bancroft, who was co-director on the 1998 Disney animated Mulan. (Premieres Friday, July 24th on Netflix.)

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: an Indonesian horror movie in which a woman who has inherited a home in the village where she was born… only to learn not only that said village is cursed, but that the villagers must kill her in order to lift the curse. Directed by Joko Anwar. (Premieres Thursday, July 23rd on Shudder.)

Moonlight Movies: Aladdin!

This weekend’s outdoor Moonlight Movie in Fawick Park in downtown Sioux Falls is the 2019 Disney live-action remake of Aladdin, starring Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott. The movie screens this Saturday, July 25th, at dusk; for more information, check out the Downtown Sioux Falls web site.
