Coming Soon: July 30th, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! This week brings us a new Disney blockbuster, an A24 epic, Matt Damon, JCVD, and more! Here’s what coming soon for the week of July 30th, 2021:

Featured Title: Jungle Cruise

If there’s a sign this week that movies are recovering from the pandemic, it’s that The Rock himself, Dwayne Johnson, is finally headlining a movie again! Yes, we haven’t seen The Rock in a movie since Christmas 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level… and now, he’s bringing us another family-friendly action/comedy romp, based on the Disney theme park attraction! Emily Blunt stars as an explorer who recruits a riverboat captain (Dwayne Johnson) for a research expedition that quickly becomes perilous! Also starring Jesse Plemons, Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, and Paul Giamatti. Helming this movie is Jaume Collet-Serra, who started out in horror (House of Wax, Orphan, and later on, The Shallows), then became Liam Neeson’s go-to director (Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter)… but who has now become one of Dwayne Johnson’s reliable directors, as they have also teamed up for The Rock’s upcoming DC comic-book vehicle Black Adam, due next July! Finally, I should call out that this is Disney’s fourth Premier Access dual release of 2021… and by all accounts, it’s their final Premier Access title as well, to theaters’ great relief. 🙂 (Opens Friday, July 30th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with preview showings beginning at 6PM on Thursday, July 29th.)

Opening in Theaters

The Green Knight

Providing a stark counter-programming option to Jungle Cruise is this, A24’s vivid new telling of the medieval story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) and his confrontation with the menacing Greek Knight (voiced by Ralph Ineson, of The Witch fame). Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton star in this epic adventure from writer/director David Lowery (A Ghost Story, The Old Man and the Gun). (Opens Friday, July 30th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls, with preview showings beginning at 7PM on Thursday, July 29th.)

Stillwater

Following Mark Wahlberg’s turn last week as Joe Bell, it’s now Matt Damon’s turn to take on the Southern Dad mantle! This is the new movie from director Tom McCarthy, best known for the Best Picture-winning Spotlight. Damon stars as an oil rig worker from Oklahoma, who flies to France to free his daughter (Abigail Breslin), who’s in prison for a murder she says she didn’t commit. (Opens Friday, July 30th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls, with preview showings beginning at 7PM on Thursday, July 29th.)

New to Streaming and VOD

The Last Mercenary

Bringing the action to Netflix is one of the genre’s masters… Jean-Claude Van Damme! He plays the world’s most elite mercenary, who must return to France when his son is framed for arms/drug trafficking by terrorists. (Hmm, I’m noticing a theme this week!) Of note: This is a full-stop French-language movie… unless Netflix auto-plays the English dub, which isn’t out of reason, so be sure to check your Netflix settings! (Premieres Friday, July 30th on Netflix.)

The Boy Behind the Door

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: Two 12-year-old boys are abducted on their way home from school… and when one of them manages to free himself, he must find a way for both of them to escape! (Premieres Thursday, July 29th on Shudder.)

The Starlite Drive-In’s Retro Double Feature!

Since we don’t have many actual new movies to talk about this week, I figured I’d use the space to highlight a fun movie event happening this weekend at one of my moviegoing hidden treasures: the Starlite Drive-In in Mitchell, SD! The Starlite re-opened in May of 2020 in direct response to the pandemic, after being closed since 2013. Since then, they’ve been showing a mix of new hits and older classics… and this weekend, they’re assembling an incredible flashback double feature of Grease (presented in its 2010 sing-along version) and American Graffiti. Both movies will be playing back-to-back on Friday, July 30th, Saturday, July 31st, and Sunday, August 1st, for the price of one ticket! (And if you attend the movies in a classic vintage car, you get in for free!) For more details, check out the Starlite page on the Logan Luxury Theatres web site!

Showing at the State!

Caddyshack

Teeing off the weekend in style at the State is the beloved 1980 golf comedy featuring comedy titans Chevy Chase, Rodkey Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Bill Murray! Directed by Harold Ramis, in his feature directing debut before helming such comedy classics as National Lampoon’s Vacation and Groundhog Day! (Showing Thursday, July 29th, Saturday, July 31st, and Sunday, August 1st at the State Theatre.)

La Bamba

This week’s entry in the State’s ongoing summer music series is the 1987 Ritchie Valens biopic, starring Lou Diamond Phillips as the early rock-and-roll star who died when he was only 17, in the tragic 1959 plane crash that also took Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Also starring Esai Morales, Elizabeth Peña, and Joe Pantoliano. Directed by Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit). (Showing Friday, July 30th and Sunday, August 1st at the State Theatre.)

The Philadelphia Story

From the Golden Age comes this beloved 1940 screwball comedy starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart! Hepburn plays a Philly socialite who has to romantically juggle her ex-husband (Grant) and a tabloid journalist (Stewart, in his only Oscar-nominated role) on the weekend of her second wedding. Directed by George Cukor (in his second film to be shown at the State since its reopening, following My Fair Lady). (Showing Friday, July 30th and Saturday, July 31st at the State Theatre.)

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Finally, the State will be showing the 1969 buddy-comedy Western starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford in their initial screen teaming! They play the titular robbers Butch & Sundance, who decide to flee to Bolivia when law enforcement begins closing in on them. Also starring Katharine Ross; directed by George Roy Hill (The Sting, Slap Shot, Funny Farm). (Showing Saturday, July 31st and Sunday, August 1st at the State Theatre.)

Moonlight Movies: Raya and the Last Dragon!

Fawick Park’s Moonlight Movies series continues this spring’s wonderful Disney animated flick starring Kelly Marie Tran as Raya, a young warrior who set out to find the mythical last dragon (voiced by Awkwafina) in order to save her people! The movie begins at dusk this Saturday, July 31st; for more info, check out the event page on the Downtown Sioux Falls web site!
