Coming Soon: July 31st, 2020

The end of the week is near… which means it’s time for this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! Yes, it’s our weekly look at what’s coming to your favorite streaming and VOD services! Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of July 31st, 2020:

New Streaming and VOD Premieres

Black is King

Leading off the week is the new “visual album” from Beyoncé – her first since 2016’s Lemonade. (It’s also Beyoncé’s first feature directorial credit since 2019’s Homecoming Netflix concert film.) Now, you’re probably wondering why a new Beyoncé movie is showing up on Disney+, of all places. Well, that’s because Black is King is derived from the songs on Beyoncé’s companion album to last year’s Lion King remake, “The Gift”… and in fact, the movie has a similar plot to The Lion King, following a young man’s rise to power as he claims his throne. Filmed in various countries over the course of a year, the movie includes cameos from Kelly Rowland, Jay-Z, Lupita Nyong’o, and Naomi Campbell, among others. (Premieres Friday, July 31st on Disney+.)

Deep Blue Sea 3

Just in time for next month’s 2020 edition of Shark Week, here comes the movie that will have you saying, “Wait a minute… there was a Deep Blue Sea 2?” Yes, the 1999 Renny Harlin classic is now a full-blown direct-to-video shark franchise! This time, a marine biologist (Lost‘s Tania Raymonde) and her crew face off against a group of sharks that have become super-aggressive thanks to climate change. (Whoa, didn’t expect topicality in my chapie shark sequels!) The movie is directed by John Pogue (The Quiet Ones). (Premiered Tuesday, July 28th on VOD and Blu-ray.)

The Speed Cubers

This week, Netflix is offering us a 40-minute documentary short about the wild and fascinating world of Rubik’s Cube speed-solving! In particular, this movie follows two stars of the competitive speed-cubing circuit: former champion Feliks Zemdegs; and Max Park, the autistic teen who ended up shattering most of Feliks’ records. The two have become best friends… even when they often find themselves competing against each other at speed-cubing championships. Directed by Sue Kim. (Premieres Wednesday, July 29th on Netflix.)

Host

In the era of COVID quarantine, it was only a matter of time before we saw a surge in video-chat-based movies, not unlike the Unfriended franchise. So, here we are with Host, a movie that was commissioned, written, produced, and released on Shudder within the span of just 3 months! (In fact, this movie is being turned around so quickly, that we don’t even have a trailer to show you!) The plot: Six friends decide to hold a Zoom-based seance while they’re stuck at home, and even bring in a medium to lead it… but the seance ends up bringing an evil spirit into their own homes. Directed and co-written by Rob Savage (Dawn of the Deaf). (Premieres Thursday, July 30th on Shudder.)

In Search of Darkness

Finally, we have this week’s regularly scheduled Shudder premiere: a fan-made documentary on 1980s horror, broken down year-by-year and clocking in at a massive 4 hours and 24 minutes! And what a group of interviewees: John Carpenter, the late Stuart Gordon and Larry Cohen, Heather Langenkamp, Barbara Crampton, Kane Hodder, Doug Bradley, Don Mancini, Mick Garris, Jeffrey Combs, Nick Castle, Alex Winter, Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson, Joe Bob Briggs, and many more! (Premieres Thursday, July 30th on Shudder.)
