Coming Soon: June 12th, 2020

Greetings, and welcome back to Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! We’re still keeping you informed on new movies that are premiering on streaming and VOD platforms… and this week, we’ve got a lot of high-profile titles to discuss! Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of June 12th, 2020:

New Streaming and VOD Premieres

Da 5 Bloods

We begin this week with a high-profile Netflix debut, and a clear kickoff to their slate of 2020 awards contenders: Spike Lee’s latest joint – and his highly-anticipated follow-up to 2018’s Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman. The movie follows 4 black middle-aged Vietnam vets (Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Norm Lewis) who head back to Vietnam in the present day. Their trip is partially a vacation, partially to remember their squad leader who died in the war (played in flashbacks by Chadwick Boseman)… but mainly, their mission is to dig up a bunch of buried gold that they found and had to abandon back in the day. This genre-blurring film also stars Jean Reno and Paul Walter Hauser. (Premieres Friday, June 12th on Netflix.)

The King of Staten Island

Next, we have what was intended to be SNL star Pete Davidson’s breakout big-screen movie role… until COVID-19 caused Universal to move this from a June 2020 theatrical release to this weekend’s VOD debut. It’s also the latest film from director Judd Apatow (his first since 2015’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck); he co-wrote this movie with Davidson. Pete plays Scott, an aimless 20-something slacker who’s still living at home with his mother (Marisa Tomei), and whose firefighter father died when he was very young. But when his mom starts dating another firefighter (Bill Burr), Scott stars to re-evaluate his life. (It should be noted that this movie is actually semi-autobiographical; like Scott, Pete Davidson still lives with his mother, and Pete’s dad was a firefighter who died in 9/11.) Steve Buscemi and Maude Apatow (Judd’s daughter) also star. (Premieres Friday, June 12th on VOD services and select theaters.)

Artemis Fowl

Next, we have a high-profile Disney+ original movie… in that this was originally supposed to premiere in theaters last August, then was delayed all the way to May 2020. Then, when the coronavirus struck, Disney finally moved this movie from theaters to Disney+, to help fill the streaming service with new content. This is a big-budget adaptation of author Eoin Colfer’s fantasy book series about a kid criminal mastermind… and it’s directed by Kenneth Branagh, no less! Ferdia Shaw stars in the title role; his character tries to find his long-lost father (Colin Farrell), and ends up venturing into the world of the fairies. Josh Gad and Judi Dench also star, as a dwarf and an elf, respectively… and you bet that Dame Dench has pointy ears! (Premieres Friday, June 12th on Disney+.)

Into the Dark: Good Boy

The latest installment in Hulu and Blumhouse’s monthly holiday-themed movie anthology is apparently supposed to tie into Pet Appreciation Week… a bit of a stretch, but I’ll go along with it. 🙂 What excites me most about this movie, though, is that it is the rare movie that gives its lead role to Judy Greer! After a seemingly endless number of thankless supporting roles on the big screen, Greer gets a chance to shine here… and in a horror movie with a decidedly comedic tone, no less. She plays a woman who decides to get an emotional support dog… and as you can probably guess, this dog is evil! Directed by Tyler MacIntire (Tragedy Girls), this movie also stars Maria Conchita Alonso and the one and only Steve Guttenberg! (Premieres Friday, June 12th on Hulu.)

Warning: Do Not Play

Finally, we have the weekly Shudder premiere… and this week, it’s a South Korean horror movie about a newbie movie director who tries to track down an infamous banned horror film that was made by a now-reclusive director. Of course, when the elder director tells the rookie to let his movie go, it doesn’t happen… and bad stuff happens! Written and directed by Kim Jin-won. (Premieres Thursday, June 11th on Shudder.)

More Free Black Films for June!

Last week, we mentioned that Warner Bros. is streaming Just Mercy for free during the month of June on VOD services, in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the resulting protests. Since then, other studios have made their own relevant black-themed movies available for free this June as well. Leading the charge is Ava Duvernay’s excellent (and shunned by Oscar) 2014 film Selma, starring David Oyelewo as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Other free movies include: George Tillman Jr.’s 2018 film The Hate U Give; last summer’s Brian Banks (directed by Tom Shadyac, the director of Ace Ventura and Liar Liar!); Denzel Washington’s 2002 directorial debut Antwone Fisher; Gina Prince-Bythewood’s 2008 film The Secret Life of Bees; and Michael Mann’s 2001 biopic Ali. As of press time, all of these movies are currently available to rent for free on Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu.
