Coming Soon: June 26th, 2020

Another week, another edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! We’ve got the lowdown on all the new VOD and streaming movies debuting this weekend, plus a bunch of special movie events in the Sioux Falls area. Here’s what’s coming soon for the week of June 26th, 2020:

New Streaming and VOD Premieres

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Leading off the week is Will Ferrell’s very first Netflix film… a comedy based on the long-running, wildly popular international singing competition Eurovision. Ferrell and Rachel McAdams play Lars and Sigrit, a pair of struggling musicians from Iceland who are given their big shot when they’re surprisingly asked to represent their country at Eurovision. The movie also stars Pierce Brosnan (as Ferrell’s “much more handsome father”!), Dan Stevens, and Demi Lovato. Directed by David Dobkin, who previously directed Ferrell and McAdams in Wedding Crashers (and who also helmed Fred Claus and The Judge). (Premieres Friday, June 26th on Netflix.)

Irresistible

Next, we have the sophomore writing/directing effort from one Mr. Jon Stewart! And unlike his debut feature, 2014’s Rosewater, this is an actual comedy! Steve Carell plays a Democrat political strategist who’s called in by the party to help a retired ex-Marine turned first-time political candidate (Chris Cooper) win a mayoral election in a small Wisconsin town, after a video by the candidate goes viral. But he soon meets his match when the Republicans bring in his ruthless nemesis (Rose Byrne) to run the incumbent mayor’s campaign. Mackenzie Davis co-stars as Cooper’s daughter. (Premieres Friday, June 26th on VOD services and select theaters…including Sioux Falls’ West Mall 7!)

My Spy

At long, long last, America is finally getting to see Dave Bautista’s long-delayed family comedy, in which he plays a CIA operative who has to watch a 9-year-old girl, leading to wacky kid-friendly situations. To recap this movie’s troubled history: This was originally supposed to hit theaters last summer, but was pulled weeks before its release when Dave Bautista’s previous comedy vehicle, Stuber, bombed at the box office. It was then rescheduled for a March 13th theatrical release, but was pulled from release the Saturday before it was to come out, due to COVID starting to break out… and then Amazon finally bought the movie to launch on their streaming service. The movie also stars Ken Jeong and Kristen Schaal, and it’s directed by comedy veteran Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard). (Premieres Friday, June 26th on Amazon Prime Video.)

Force of Nature

And now, your periodic reminder that Mel Gibson is still making movies… although mostly in the straight-to-video sphere! Mel plays an ex-cop who, with the help of his daughter Kate Bosworth and current cop Emile Hirsch, take on a group of thieves (led by Dexter‘s David Zayas) who are attempting to rob a fellow occupant in their apartment building. But, there’s a twist: The entire movie takes place during… a hurricane! Yep, it’s a hurricane heist! (But not The Hurricane Heist!) Directed by Michael Polish, of the Polish brothers (The Astronaut Farmer, Twin Falls, Idaho). (Premieres Tuesday, June 30th on VOD services.)

Yummy

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere, a Belgian horror movie about a couple that heads to a sketchy Eastern European hospital for plastic surgery… and ends up encountering a deadly virus that leads to a zombie outbreak! Written and directed by Lars Damoiseaux. (Premieres Thursday, June 25th on Shudder.)

Stream Do the Right Thing for Free!

In the Coming Soon column these past few weeks, we’ve been tracking various black-led films that the major studios have been offering for free on various streaming services during the month of June. Now we have one more addition to this list, and it’s an important one: Spike Lee’s seminal 1989 race-relations drama Do the Right Thing, starring Lee, Danny Aiello, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie is being offered for free from now through June 29th, as part of the American Film Institute’s Movie Club. In addition, an AFI live discussion with Spike Lee will be held at 7PM Central this Thursday, June 25th; we’ve linked directly to that video below.

Ghostbusters Day Returns!

Last month, Sony was gearing up to hold special nationwide drive-in and theatrical screenings of the original 1984 Ghostbusters on the date of its anniversary, June 8th. However, due to the George Floyd protests and riots, Sony quickly cancelled the event, mere days before it was supposed to happen. However, Sony has now officially rescheduled the event for Wednesday, July 1st! Rumor has it that this screening will contain special bonus footage, some of which may be related to next spring’s highly-anticipated Ghostbusters: Afterlife… but we won’t know for sure until we know! In South Dakota, theaters confirmed to be holding the event as of press time include the Starlite Drive-In in Mitchell, and the Dakota Cinema in Madison… and the official South Dakota Ghostbusters group will be in Madison that night for the event!

Anchorman at the All-American Drive-In Movie!

For those who’ve wished that Sioux Falls would once again have a drive-in movie theater, your wish is coming true… for this weekend, at least! This Friday-Sunday, June 26th-28th at the Lake Lorraine retail area (the parking lot south of Hobby Lobby), the “All-American Drive-In Movie” will be showing 2004’s comedy classic Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy twice each night, at 9:00 PM and 11:15 PM. The Big Orange Food Truck will be on-premises serving up goodies as well. Only 70 cars will be allowed at each screening, so be sure to be on the ball! For more information on this special event, head on over to the event’s official Facebook page.

Moonlight Movies Presents James and the Giant Peach!

This Saturday night’s Moonlight Movie in downtown Sioux Falls’ Fawick Park is the 1996 Disney stop-motion animated flick James and the Giant Peach. Based on the book by Roald Dahl, this movie was director Henry Selick’s follow-up to The Nightmare Before Christmas, before segueing into such other projects as the infamous Monkeybone and the brilliant Coraline.
