Coming Soon: October 1st, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! Without a doubt, this October is going to be the single busiest movie month that we’ve had since the start of the pandemic… and as you’ll see below, just this first weekend of October alone is jam-packed with titles! (And if that weren’t enough, Back Lot 605 is also mounting its first-ever film festival this weekend as well!) Here’s what coming soon for the week of October 1st, 2021:

Featured Title: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Three years ago, Tom Hardy introduced us to his singularly bizarre performance as Eddie Brock/Venom in 2018’s Venom… and ended up being the highlight of an otherwise very uneven comic book flick. (Remember the scene involving the lobster tank? Of course you do!) The movie’s post-credits scene teased a future showdown between Eddie/Venom and the incarcerated Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage… played by Woody Harrelson in a truly frightening wig! And now, that showdown is finally here, after a year of COVID delays… and replacing the first film’s Ruben Fleischer in the director’s chair is Gollum himself, Andy Serkis! Michelle Williams returns as Eddie’s ex-wife (but will She-Venom make an appearance???)… and Reid Scott and Naomie Harris both join the cast. (Opens Friday, October 1st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 4PM on Thursday, September 30th.)

Opening in Theaters

The Addams Family 2

Venom 2 isn’t the only sequel this weekend: We’re also getting a follow-up to the hit 2019 animated reboot of the creepy family franchise! This time, the Addams are going on a family road trip… and America won’t be safe! Most of the original voice cast returns, including Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Bette Midler, and Snoop Dogg (but not Finn Wolfhard)… and Bill Hader and Wallace Shawn both join the cast! Until very recently, this was originally a theatrical-only release… but thanks to the Delta variant, this is now going day-and-date on premium VOD as well!(Opens Friday, October 1st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 4PM on Thursday, September 30th, and also debuting on premium VOD the same day.)

The Many Saints of Newark

Next up is not a sequel… but a prequel: This 1970s-set tale that serves as a prologue to HBO’s The Sopranos. The big hook here, of course, is that James Gandolfini’s son Michael takes on his father’s most famous role, as the young Tony Soprano, who begins his time in the world of crime under the tutelage of his uncle Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola). Also starring Vera Farmiga (as Tony’s mon), Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, and Ray Liotta. Directed by Alan Taylor, who directed episodes of the original series before segueing to features with Thor: The Dark World and Terminator: Genisys. (Opens Friday, October 1st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, and streaming on HBO Max the same day.)

The Jesus Music

Wrapping up the slate of nationwide theatrical releases this weekend is this documentary on the story of how contemporary Christian music became a dominant music genre… with a wide array of interviewees including Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, DC Talk, Steven Curtis Chapman, Newsboys, and more! Directed by The Erwin Brothers (I Still Believe, I Can Only Imagine). (Opens Friday, October 1st in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 6PM on Thursday, September 30th.)

New to Streaming and VOD

The Guilty

Hot on the heels of Antoine Fuqua’s Infinite, which premiered on Paramount+ in June, here comes his second streaming movie of 2021, which was filmed during COVID in just 11 days! Jake Gyllenhaal plays a demoted policeman who’s assigned to the 911 desk… and receives a disturbing emergency call from a young woman, whom he’s then compelled to save by any means necessary. Also starring Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Peter Saarsgard, Bill Burr, and Paul Dano. (Premieres Friday, October 1st on Netflix.)

The Card Counter

Three weeks ago, Paul Schrader’s latest film debuted in 500-some theaters nationwide… but Sioux Falls missed the cut! However, as this movie falls under the Universal/Focus umbrella, it’s getting a three-week turnaround to premium VOD… so now you can finally check it out! Oscar Isaac stars as an ex-military investigator who was involved in (and imprisoned for) the Abu Ghirab prison torture… and who now makes a living as a high-stakes gambler. Also starring Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, and Willem Dafoe. (Premieres Thursday, September 30th on VOD services.)

Bingo Hell

This October, Amazon Prime brings back their “Welcome to the Blumhouse” movie series, with four new films… two of which are dropping this weekend, with the other 2 coming next Friday, October 8th! First up this week is this horror-comedy about a group of senior citizens whose bingo hall is converted into something much more sinister! Starring Adriana Barazza, L. Scott Caldwell, and Richard Brake; directed and co-written by Gigi Saul Guerrero. (Premieres Friday, October 1st on Amazon Prime Video.)

Black as Night

This week’s other “Welcome to the Blumhouse” entry follows a teenage girl living in New Orleans, who’s attacked by a group of homeless vampires… and assembles a team of other teens to hunt them down! Starring Asjha Cooper and Keith David; directed by Maritte Lee Go. (Premieres Friday, October 1st on Amazon Prime Video.)

Escape the Undertaker

For our Back Lot wrestling fans, we wanted to highlight this, which is Netflix’s latest choose-your-own-adventure interactive movie… and it’s WWE-themed! The premise: The New Day tries to make their way through The Undertaker’s creepy mansion! (Premieres Tuesday, October 5th on Netflix.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldgpvlN8XL4

No One Gets Out Alive

For a much different spooky experience on Netflix this weekend, here comes this story about an undocumented Mexican woman (Cristina Rodlo) who moves into a Cleveland boardinghouse… and finds that she can’t escape! (Premieres Wednesday, September 29th on Netflix.)

Séance

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere… and it’s actually a movie that we’ve covered before, when it made its VOD debut in May! It’s the feature directing debut of Adam Wingard’s frequent collaborator Simon Barrett, who co-wrote You’re NextThe Guest, and 2016’s Blair Witch. It follows the newest student (Suki Waterhouse) at an all-girls boarding school, who is invited by some of her fellow schoolmates to join them in a seance to contact a former student who died many years ago. (Premieres Wednesday, September 29th on Shudder.)

Returning to Theaters

Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931)

Last summer, the Back Lot 605 crew was able to experience a double feature of two of the seminal Universal Monsters classics, 1931’s Dracula starring Bela Lugosi and 1931’s Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff, at our local West Mall 7 theater… and it was a blast! If you missed out, though, you’re in luck, because Fathom Events is putting on a one-day-only 90th anniversary Fathom Events double feature of these two horror movies! (And it’s perfect timing as well, because next week’s Back Lot 605 episode will indeed be covering the 1931 Dracula!) This will be followed by another Universal Monsters double feature, of The Wolf Man and The Invisible Man, on October 30th. (Showing one day only, Saturday, October 2nd in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls.)

Spirited Away

This weekend marks the return of an annual theatrical staple: the Studio Ghibli Fest! This year’s slate of theatrical screenings from the legendary Japanese animation studio includes 4 films, and will run through December… and kicking this year’s series off is a 20th anniversary screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 masterpiece, which is still the only Studio Ghibli film that has won the Best Animated Feature Oscar. (Showing Sunday, October 3rd (dubbed), Monday, October 4th (subtitled), and Wednesday, October 6th (dubbed) in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajfp0UaPs9g

The Evil Dead

The final Fathom Events retro screening is actually a screening that’s happening late next week… but I wanted to give you all ample time to plan for it, because… well… it’s The Evil Dead! Yes, the 1981 horror movie that first brought Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell to the big screen is returning to theaters for one night only, to celebrate its 40th anniversary! This screening will also include a brand-new introduction by Bruce Campbell himself! (Showing one night only, Thursday, October 7th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls.)

Showing at the State!

The Dark Knight

Leading the State’s weekend slate is their latest Staff Pick… and it’s timed perfectly with this weekend’s Siouxpercon festivities! Following March’s successful State run of 1989’s Batman, here comes Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed 2008 blockbuster, in which Christian Bale’s Batman squares off against The Joker (played by Heath Ledger in his Oscar-winning performance). Also starring Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, plus Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. (Showing Thursday, September 30th, Saturday, October 2nd and Sunday, October 3rd at the State Theatre.)

Titane

This weekend, the State is also bringing in a brand-new theatrical release… on its nationwide opening weekend! On top of that, it’s also the winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival! Written and directed by Julia Ducournau (Raw), it follows Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), a car model who has a titanium plate surgically fused to her skull, as a result of a childhood car accident. From there, she… well, it’s probably best if I don’t say anything, but suffice to say that it’s all very R-rated. 🙂 (Showing Friday, October 1st, Saturday, October 2nd, Sunday, October 3rd and Thursday, October 7th at the State Theatre.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYm2RETn_oQ

House (Hausu)

This weekend brings us the first of the State’s four Late Night at the State offerings for the month of October… and it’s gonna be a wild one! Yes, this is the cult Japanese 1977 horror-comedy about a group of students who wind up in a haunted house. And like Titane, the less said, the better! Of note: Admission to House is free for State members! (Showing one night only, Friday, October 1st at the State Theatre.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ_Yo06kIIA

Rudy

Finally, the State is celebrating college football season by screening the 1993 inspirational football drama from director David Anspaugh and writer Angelo Pizzo, the team who brought us 1986’s Hoosiers. Based on a true story, it stars Sean Astin as Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, a determined young man from a steel-mill town whose dream is to play Notre Dame football. Also starring Ned Beatty, Charles S. Dutton, Lili Taylor, and Jon Favreau. (Showing Saturday, October 2nd and Sunday, October 3rd at the State Theatre.)
