Coming Soon: October 29th, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! This week, we’ve got a couple of long-awaited new movies from some beloved names in cinema… as well as all sorts of screenings of classic horror and horror-adjacent movies for the Halloween holiday! Here’s what coming soon for the week of October 29th, 2021:

Featured Title: Last Night in Soho

Finally landing in theaters this week is a title that was originally scheduled to come out last October, prior to the pandemic: Edgar Wright’s highly-anticipated scripted follow-up to 2017’s Baby Driver! This is a psychological horror movie starring Thomasin McKenzie as up-and-coming modern-day fashion designer who’s mysteriously transported to 1960s London… where she witnesses events through the eyes of an aspiring singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). However, nothing is as it seems… and McKenzie becomes privy to a deadly fate that only she can resolve in the present! Also starring Matt Smith, Terence Stamp, and the late Diana Rigg in her final acting role. (Opens Friday, October 29th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 7PM on Thursday, October 28th.)

Opening in Theaters

Antlers

Next, we have another long-delayed movie… one that was actually supposed to come out weeks after the original COVID lockdown, in late April 2020. This comes to us from producer Guillermo del Toro and director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Black Mass, Hostiles). A small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her town-sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons!!!) encounter a elementary student who has a dark secret. Also starring Graham Greene, Rory Cochrane, and Amy Madigan. (Opens Friday, October 29th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews beginning at 6PM on Thursday, October 28th.)

My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission

Next up is the first major theatrical anime release since Demon Slayer: The Movie conquered the box office in April! This is the third movie based on the My Hero Academia anime series… and, in fact, the previous movie, Heroes Rising, made a solid $13.5 million in February 2020, right before lockdown. This time, Izuku Midoriya and his classmates join the world’s Pro-Heroes to stop a terrorist plan! As is typically the case for these anime releases, it is being shown in both subtitled and dubbed versions… so check your showtimes closely! (Opens Friday, October 29th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD and the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls.)

A Mouthful of Air

The last theatrical release this week stars Amanda Seyfried as a loving wife who writes storybooks for a living… and who ends up battling postpartum depression when she and her husband (Finn Wittrock) have their first child. Also starring Paul Giamatti, Britt Robertson, Amy Irving, and Michael Gaston. (Opens Friday, October 29th in theaters nationwide, including the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls, with previews starting at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 29th.)

New to Streaming and VOD

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin

This weekend brings what’s arguably Paramount+’s most notable exclusive movie release to date… and yes, I’m well aware that the movie Infinite exists! Yes, the hit horror franchise returns for its seventh installment (and the first since 2015’s 3D-enhanced The Ghost Dimension)… and it switches up the setting considerably, as we follow a young woman who returns to a remote religious community to meet her only known relatives… only for stuff to get real creepy fast! And since said woman is a filmmaker, she decides to make a documentary about her trip… hence the return of the franchise’s found footage conceit! Directed by William Eubank (last year’s K-Stew thriller Underwater), with Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day 1 & 2; Freaky) returning to write his fifth installment in this series! (Premieres Friday, October 29th on Paramount+.)

Army of Thieves

Remember back in May, when Netflix debuted Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead? Well, guess what: Here’s a spin-off/prequel of that movie, starring (and directed by!) Matthias Schweighöfer, who played the master safecracker Dieter. Set six years before the events of Army of the Dead (when the zombie apocalypse is only just beginning), this follows Dieter as he’s recruited for a three-vault heist. Also starring Nathalie Emmanuel. (Premieres Friday, October 29th on Netflix.)

Hypnotic

Also on the Netflix original front this week: A woman seeks the help of a hypnotherapist in order to improve her life… but these sessions lead to dangerous consequences! Starring Kate Siegel, Jason O’Mara, and Dule Hill. (Premieres Wednesday, October 27th on Netflix.)

Horror Noire

Back in 2019, Shudder debuted the documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, which dissected the genre not only from Black filmmakers, but also the fates of Black characters throughout the decades of horror. Now, as a follow-up, Shudder is premiering this anthology film of six new short horror films made by Black directors. Cast members for these six segments include Tony Todd, Peter Stormare, Lesley Ann-Brandt, Rachel True, Malcolm Barrett, Sean Patrick Thomas, Lavell Crawford, Erica Ash, and many more! (Premieres Thursday, October 28th on Shudder.)

Returning to Theaters

The Wolf Man (1941)/The Invisible Man (1944)

Fathom Events’ second Universal Monsters double feature of the month brings us the original iconic turns of Lon Chaney as The Wolf Man and Claude Rains as The Invisible Man! This event is being held in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Wolf Man… as well as the recent 4K releases of these films in the Universal Monsters Classic Collection box set! (Showing Saturday, October 30th in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD in Sioux Falls.)

Ghostbusters

To prepare for the November 19 release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the original 1984 comedy blockbuster is returning to selected theaters this Halloween weekend! And FYI, the Back Lot main feed podcast will be covering this very movie on the November 10th episode, as part of our Ivan Reitman series for the month of November… so here’s a great chance to revisit it before then! (Showing Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st in theaters nationwide, including the Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls.)

Little Shop of Horrors at Coffea Downtown!

Our friends at The Nosebleeds Film Festival are getting in at the Halloween fun, with a screening of the 1986 musical remake of Little Shop of Horrors, starring Rick Moranis, and Ellen Greene, with cameos by Steve Martin, John Candy, and Bill Murray! This will take the place of the regular October installment of the Nosebleed festival, and will be held at the downtown Coffea location at 10th & Phillips in Sioux Falls on Saturday, October 30th at 6:30 PM! For more information, head to the event’s Facebook page!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Orpheum!

Last Halloween, after an absence of many years, the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls brought back Halloween weekend showings of this 1975 cult classic starring Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, and Susan Sarandon! And this year, they’re doing the Time Warp yet again, with showings at 7:30 PM on both Friday, October 29th and Saturday, October 30th! Click here for details and tickets!

Showing at the State!

Creature from the Black Lagoon

The final entry in the State’s Wednesday night vintage horror series is this 1954 Universal creature feature, about a group of scientists who want to capture the titular creature for their studying purposes! Starring Richard Carlson and Julie Adams. (Showing Wednesday, October 27th and Friday, October 29th at the State Theatre.)

The Exorcist: The Version You’ve Never Seen

Returning to the State after its wildly successful original 11-week run in 1974, here comes the William Friedkin horror masterpiece, starring Ellen Burstyn as a mother who hires two priests (Max von Sydow and Jason Miller) when her 12-year-old daughter Regan (Linda Blair) is possessed. Of note: This is being presented in its 2000 re-edit, with 10 additional minutes of footage including the haunting spider-walk sequence! (Showing Thursday, October 28th, Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st at the State Theatre.)

Halloween

Look, it’s Halloween weekend… so what better movie for the State to show than John Carpenter’s 1978 breakout hit named after the holiday itself! Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Laurie Strode, whose night of babysitting turns into terror when a deadly mental hospital escapee named Michael Myers (Nick Castle) hunts her and her friends down! Also starring Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis, plus P.J. Soles and Nancy Loomis. (Showing Friday, October 29th, Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st at the State Theatre.)

A Nightmare on Elm Street

The final Late Night at the State for the month of October is Wes Craven’s 1984 hit that kicked off a storied franchise, starring Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger and Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson! (Showing one night only, Friday, October 29th at the State Theatre.)

Hotel Transylvania

For the kiddies, the State is showing the 2012 animated monster comedy, in which Dracula (Adam Sandler) runs a hotel exclusively for monsters! Also starring Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, and David Spade. (Showing Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st at the State Theatre.)
