Coming Soon: September 3rd, 2021

Welcome to this week’s edition of Back Lot 605’s Coming Soon column! The summer may be wrapping up on this Labor Day weekend, but fortunately we’re getting a big Marvel movie to wind things down! Here’s what coming soon for the week of September 3rd, 2021:

Featured Title: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The big movie event this weekend is Marvel Studios’ second movie of 2021… which, yes, is coming out just eight weeks after Black Widow! (And the next Phase 4 movie after that, Eternals, is coming out nine weeks from now, on November 5th… so be sure to keep up with your MCU!) Simu Liu stars as the titular martial arts master, who tries to shed his early assassin training with a normal life in San Francisco… but who gets pulled back in against his will! Also starring Awkwafina, Tony Leung, and Michelle Yeoh; directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, Just Mercy). Of note: If you join the Back Lot 605 Patreon, the first bonus episode of September will be on Shang-Chi… so sign up today! And last but not least, I should call out that, unlike Black Widow, this movie will not be dual-released in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access, and will instead be a theater exclusive for the first 45 days… so plan accordingly! (Opens Friday, September 3rd in theaters nationwide, including the Century Stadium 14 & XD, the Century East at Dawley Farm, and the West Mall 7 in Sioux Falls, with previews starting at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 2nd.)

New to Streaming and VOD

Cinderella

From Kay Cannon, the director of Blockers and the writer of the Pitch Perfect trilogy, comes this new fashion-focused jukebox-musical take on the classic fairy tale, starring Camilla Cabello in the title role, Idina Menzel as her stepmother, and Billy Porter putting his own spin on the Fairy Godmother role… plus Minnie Driver, Pierce Brosnan and (brace yourselves) James Corden. I should also mention that this is one of Sony’s many movies that was supposed to be a theatrical release, but has since been sold off to a streaming service during the pandemic… and in fact, Amazon Prime will debut another Sony acquisition next month: Hotel Transylvania 4! (Premieres Friday, September 3rd on Netflix.)

Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles

Building on their momentum from last year’s surprise Taylor Swift film based on her Folklore album, Disney+ is now debuting a concert film of Billie Eilish performing every song from her new album at the Hollywood Bowl, accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (!!!) and Patrick Osborne. (Premieres Friday, September 3rd on Disney+.)

Worth

Timed for the upcoming 20th anniversary of 9/11, Netflix debuts this Sundance-acquired drama, starring Michael Keaton as an attorney who’s tasked with the difficult assignment of distributing compensation to the families of the victims of that fateful day. Also starring Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, Tate Donovan, Laura Benanti, and Marc Maron; directed by Sara Colangelo (The Kindergarten Teacher). (Premieres Friday, September 3rd on Netflix.)

Afterlife of the Party

Netflix’s other movie debut this weekend comes to us from director Stephen Herek, whom you know as the director of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and The Mighty Ducks! In this comedy, a hard-partying young woman (Victoria Justice) accidentally dies after slipping in her bathroom… and is given 5 days to complete her unfinished business on Earth. (Premieres Thursday, September 2nd on Netflix.)

Superhost

Finally, we have this week’s Shudder premiere: Two travel vloggers discover that the host of their secluded mountain vacation home is kinda crazy… and decide to make a bunch of videos about her, which doesn’t end well! Starring Sarah Canning, Osric Chau, Gracie Gillam, and Barbara Crampton; written and directed by Brandon Christensen (Z, Still/Born). (Premieres Thursday, September 2nd on Shudder.)
