Aww 1990’s Disney how we love you. In the decade that many consider to be the Disney Renaissance, Disney churned out many films in an albeit forgotten sub-genre, live-action family comedies. Films like Honey I Shrunk the Kids, The Mighty Ducks, and Tom and Huck all are defining films for a younger generation. Another film that helped shaped a generation was the 1995 summer camp comedy Heavyweights. On today’s podcast, hosts Casey and Brian are joined by writer’s Andy Erickson and Joe Fisher to discuss the Ben Stiller lead film.
Heavyweights in directed and co-written by Steven Brill, who penned the script alongside Judd Apatow. The film stars Ben Stiller, Paul Feig, Tom McGowan, Kenan Thompson, and Aaron Schwartz. Overweight adolescent Gerry (Schwartz) is sent to a “fat camp” to get his weight under control. When he arrives to camp, a new owner, Tony Perkis (Stiller) begins a egomaniacal path to whip the kids at the camp into shape. The campers try to regain their camp and dream summer back!
