Labyrinth – 1980’s Fantasy Films Series

Welcome to Episode 86 of the Back Lot 605 Podcast! We are in week 2 of our 1980’s Fantasy Films series as we discuss the 1986 film, Labyrinth. Returning to the show is long time collaborator and one of our favorite people around, Cory Jacobsen! Cory is the man behind our favorite Instagram account @somewhatrandommoviecollection. He joins the show to discuss all things Jim Henson, David Bowie, and the infamous cinematic bulge. Is Labyrinth one of your childhood favorites? What is your favorite scene? Let us know!

Labyrinth is directed by Jim Henson, and based on an original idea by Henson, with a screenplay by Terry Jones. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as a bright-eyed teenager Sarah, who is obsessed with the world of fantasy. After wishing her infant brother away, Jareth the Goblin King (Bowie) takes her baby brother to the world of magic and fantasy. Sarah must solve a series of riddle and an impossible labyrinth to save her brother from the Goblin King.

The Box Office

We have a new king of the domestic box office and it’s name is Tenet. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet tops the box office with a $20 million opening. The New Mutants takes the number two spot with $3 million. Coming in at three is Unhinged with $1.8 million. Bill and Ted Face the Music takes the number four spot with over $773,000. Rounding out the box office is Sponge on the Run with $345,000.

The News

In a rather slow news week, The Batman has halted production. Star Robert Pattinson has tested positive for COVID-19. We wish Pattinson a speedy recovery and a safe return to the set.

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son Cooper has been cast in the next Paul Thomas Anderson film. Hoffman, a longtime PTA collaborator, passed away in 2014 at the age of 46. The upcoming film will follow a high school student, who was a famous child actor.
