Lady in the Water – M. Night Shyamalan Series

With the release of the 14th film in the career of director M. Night Shyamalan Old releasing this summer, we take a look back at the career of the man once dubbed “The Next Spielberg”. We begin this series at the midway point of his career by discussing the 2006 fantasy drama, Lady in the Water. We are joined by Back Lot 605’s own Derrick Veurink to discuss the strangest film in M. Night’s career and discuss the latest movie news and box office results.

Lady in the Water is based on a children’s story by Shyamalan and follows the fantastical tale of an underground world of nymphs who are in constant battle with wolf-like creatures called Scrunts. Story (Bryce Dallas Howard), is sent to our world to help a writer discover his path towards saving the world, she is helped along the way by apartment superintendent Cleveland (Paul Giamatti). Along with other residents of the apartment, Story must find her way back home to the “Blue World”.

The Box Office

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt take the top spot this weekend with Jungle Cruise taking in $35.02 million. The man of the month M. Night Shyamalan and Old takes in $6.86 million at number two. Coming in at number three is The Green Knight with $6.75 million. Black Widow brings in $6.47 million at number four. Rounding out the top five is Stillwater with $5.19 million.

The News

Brothers Colin (Saturday Night Live) and Casey Jost (Impractical Jokers) to pen a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie for Paramount. The film will be a live-action feature, no word yet if it will be a sequel to any previous TMNT films.

In casting news, LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish to star In Haunted Mansion for Disney, while Tom Hanks joins the cast of the next Wes Anderson film.
