That’s News To Me July 22 – Aug. 4
The first trailer for the Venom sequel dropped, Michael B. Jordan connected to Superman AGAIN and some comic film news not from Marvel or DC.
Let There Be CARNAGE!
The first trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage released earlier this week, showing us a little of what’s next for our favorite symbiote.
Like any first trailer, just enough was given away to whet our appetites for the upcoming film, including a good look at Woody Harrelson’s character Cletus Kasady and Carnage. Eddie Brock will be doing a feature on Kasady, a deranged serial killer, which has some light Silence of the Lambs vibes going on.
What’s most interesting is the inclusion of Ravencroft Institute and the mutant character Shriek. Ravencroft has big significance in Marvel Comics as it houses many supervillains and is connected X-Men villain Mr. Sinister.
While it’s becoming apparent the invisible walls between MCU and Sony films are soon to be shattered, there wasn’t anything obvious in the Venom trailer to indicate it will be crossing over with Spider-Man or the MCU. That is aside from the Daily Bugle logo on Eddie’s newspaper looking identical to that of the logo in the Sam Raimi films. We’re still a few months away from serious answers to how the Marvel multiverse is going to work.
Until then, this film looks like it will carry the odd couple comedy from the first film with a much stronger villain in line.
More from Marvel
- The first peak at Christian Bale’s character in Thor: Love and Thunder has leaked from The Daily Mail. Bale will play Gorr The God Butcher, an alien who blames the gods for the death of his family and is out for revenge.
- Wilson Duke has confirmed he will reprise his role as M’Baku in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
More Superman rumors indicating SuperMEN?
Michael B. Jordan’s name is again being connected to Superman. Jordan had been in talks with Warner a couple years ago after the release of Justice League.
A few months ago it was reported JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates were on board to develop a new Superman film starring a Black Superman. But Jordan has shot down rumors he will be connected to this project.
Instead, Jordan and his production company Outlier Studios are developing a separate Superman project featuring the Earth-2 version of the character, Val-Zod. At this time the project is said to be slated for HBO Max.
How these two versions of Superman can be happening simultaneously is still hazy. One important distinction is Val-Zod is a completely different character than Kal-El – the Superman most people are familiar with. Like Kal-El, Val-Zod was one of the few children to escape a dying Krypton. Though Val-Zod doesn’t arrive on Earth right away. Instead he is left floating in his space pod for more of his life before being discovered on Earth.
It’s too early to tell what would happen in a Val-Zod story for live action. There’s potential for Val-Zod to face off against his predecessor for the Superman helm, which might be a longshot.
More from DC
- Empire reports JK Simmons is in talks to reprise his short-lived role as Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming Batgirl film for HBO Max.
- Xolo Mariduena has been cast as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle for the upcoming Blue Beetle movie. Mariduena is known for his role as Miguel Diaz on the Netflix series Cobra Kai. Angel Manuel Soto is on to direct the film.
Twice the Turtle Power
Back in June, Seth Rogen announced his upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles CGI-animated film. He posted a notebook page filled with sketches drawn by the Turtles’ leader Leonardo, indicating we will see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who are actually teenagers in his film.
Rogen said his Ninja Turtles film will be released Aug. 11, 2023.
Now it looks like another Turtles film could be on the way. This one in live action. SNL Weekend Update host Colin Jost and his brother Casey are in the early stages of writing the film, according to Variety. There are few other details in terms of a release window, direction of the film, or how it will coexist with Rogen’s project.
For those who didn’t love the most recent live-action adaptation, it is important to note Michael Bay is one of five producers on the project, though there is no word on him directing.
The real question is which Ninja Turtle will Pete Davidson be voicing? Davidson will star in Worst Man, a film Jost is also co-writing.
