Nightbreed – Clive Barker Series

“It’s all true. God’s an Astronaut. Oz is Over the Rainbow, and Midian is where the monsters live.” Welcome monsters to week two of our October Clive Barker series in which we discuss the work of famed author and filmmaker. We are joined by one of our favorite people in the world Cory Jacobsen to discuss one of his favorites of all time, Nightbreed. Since the first day we had Cory on the show, Nightbreed has been the topic of many discussions. This week, we finally give this strange film the full episode treatment, just for all the monsters out there.

Based on the novella Cabal by Clive Barker, Nightbreed (1990) is directed and adapted to the screen by Mr. Barker himself. The film follows Aaron Boone, a man who has become reliant on his therapist after he becomes obsessed with the mythical world of Midian. After an encounter with the monster of Midian, Boone finds his destiny as a savior for the “nightbreed” and to liberate them from the underground world in which they inhabit.

The Box Office

We have a new king of the box office! Robert DeNiro’s The War with Grandpa tops this weekend’s numbers with a $3.6 million opening. Tenet drops to number two with $2.1 million. At number three is the Disney Halloween classic Hocus Pocus with $1.1 million. The New Mutants stick around the top five with $685,000. Lastly, Unhinged takes the five spot with $660,000.

The News

Disney was the talk of the town this week with some major announcements coming from the Mouse House. First, Pixar’s Soul will be releasing Christmas Day on Disney Plus. Unlike Mulan earlier this year, Soul will be included with Disney Plus monthly subscriptions.

Last week we discussed Jamie Foxx’s Electro returning in Spider-Man 3 for Marvel and Sony. Now, it has been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange in the film as well. This furthers the speculation that the Tom Holland lead film will be opening the multi-verse for the Spider-Man films. It is also rumored that Dane DeHaan and Kirsten Dunst will be returning as their Spidey characters as well.
