The Battered Bastards of Baseball Spotlight

Welcome listeners to the latest episode of the Back Lot 605 Podcast! This week are rounding third and heading for home in our Baseball Films mini-series. We take a step back from a traditional narrative story, and head to the world of documentary. Today we look at the 2014 Netflix Original documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball!

The Battered Bastards of Baseball is a documentary about the short lived Portland Mavericks independent minor league baseball team. One may be asking, why is this important? Did we mention the team was owned by actor Bing Russell, father to film legend Kurt Russell? This is the story of a rag-tag group of misfits and outcasts that band together to change the game of professional baseball. This is our spotlight on The Battered Bastards of Baseball.

The Box Office

Theaters have began opening in North America, with new releases already arriving in Canada. This week’s box office number will lean heavy to our neighbors to the north as we wait for our theaters to reopen next week. Coming in at number one is the brand new SpongeBob SquarePants movie. Sponge on the Run opens in Canada with a steady $865,000 first weekend. The Russell Crowe lead Unhinged opens to over $600,000 one week ahead of it’s U.S. release. Last week’s number one The Tax Collector takes in $182,000 in third. The Rental continues strong in limited theaters with over $90,000. Lastly, Peninsula takes the number five spot with just under $80,000.

The News

It was a very slow week for movie news. The only story that broke before time of recording involves a remake to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. A remake of the film is in the works with Will Smith and Kevin Hart taking on the starring roles. The original John Hughes directed film starred Steve Martin and John Candy on a cross-country holiday trip.
