This is a podcast you can’t refuse. Welcome back, or for the first time, to the Back Lot 605 Podcast. This is the “Premier South Dakota Movie Podcast” featuring monthly series, movie news, and box office reports. This month we begin our Francis Ford Coppola series with the all-time classic, The Godfather. Perhaps the biggest blind spot for hosts Casey and Brian, so why not ask a resident Godfather superfan on to the show? We are joined by Tony Tubes, the host of Silver Screen Showdown to discuss Coppola’s masterwork.
The Godfather is written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Talia Shire. Taking place in 1940’s New York, the film follows the Corleone crime family lead by Don Vito. After an assignation attempt on his life, his son’s devise a plan to enact revenge, leading the family down a path of destruction.
The Box Office
The namesake of last month’s podcasts, Godzilla vs Kong, tops the weekend box office with a $32.2 million 3 day opening. This marks the highest pandemic box office results, with the film’s overall 5 day total being nearly $50 million. Opening at number two is The Unholy, with a $3.2 million Easter weekend total. Nobody drops to number three with $3.07 million. At number four is Raya and the Last Dragon with $2.05 million. Rounding out the top five at the box office is Tom & Jerry with $1.4 million.
Speaking of this week’s box office, Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard has been attached to another project, that being a live action remake of Thundercats. Based on the cult classic 80’s cartoon, Wingard will step into the director’s chair, presumable after production on his Face/Off sequel concludes.
In a game changing acquisition, Netflix has opted over $450 million for two sequels to the 2019 hit, Knives Out. It has been announced that director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig will return for these two sequels.
Lastly, the first official trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy has hit the web. The sequel follows Bugs and the gang teaming up with current NBA star Lebron James to take on a new evil monster basketball team. Surprisingly the trailer shows off other notable Warner Bros. properties including Iron Giant, The Flinstones, and the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange. This film is not yet rated.
