The NeverEnding Story – 1980’s Fantasy Films Series

Welcome to a brand NEW series on the Back Lot 605 Podcast! We kick off our 1980’s Fantasy Films Series with the 1984 film, The NeverEnding Story. We are joined by our good friend Andy Heller, the resident ‘Fat Dude’ of Fat Dude Digs Flicks! This film was chosen by Andy and co-host Brian Mensing, as it is a childhood classic for them both. Casey on the other hand, has never seen this film up until this podcast! What do you think our thoughts will be? Do you like The NeverEnding Story?

The NeverEnding Story is written and directed by German filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen and is based on the novel by author Michael Ende. Bastian is an imaginative kid who spends more time in the world of his favorite books than in reality. When he comes across a “magic” book he finds himself engulfed in the world of warriors, elves, and dragons. In the book we follow young warrior Atreyu and his dragon Falkor as they try to save the universe.

The Box Office

As we recorded this episode a few days early, we did not get the entire box office rundown for the weekend. Instead, we discussed the projections for the top three films this week. The New Mutants reigned supreme this weekend with a $7 million opening. Last week’s number one Unhinged dropped one spot to $2.6 million. Bill and Ted Face the Music opened at $1.1 million in theaters, while also debuting on VOD the same day.

The News

Disney’s The Haunted Mansion is heading for a reboot. Based on the popular theme park ride of the same name, the film will be written by Ghostbuster (2016) scribe Katie Dippold. No word yet on casting for the reboot.

A couple new trailers dropped this week. The first of which is for the 7th film in the Tremors series, Tremors: Shrieker Island. Michael Gross returns as Burt Gummer, alongside new cast member Jon Heder. The film hits VOD this upcoming October.

The sequel to the hit Netflix horror/comedy The Babysitter gets a first look and a new title. The Babysitter: Killer Queen sees nearly the entire cast of the film return, with notable exception being Samara Weaving. The film sees the teenage killer cult return from the dead. The sequel begins streaming on Netflix next week.

We celebrate the life and mourn the passing of actor Chadwick Boseman. Boseman passed away on August 28 at the age of 43 after a 4 year battle with colon cancer. The actor was best known for his roles as Black Panther, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown. Words can not describe this tragic loss of a man gone too soon. Boseman left a lasting legacy on the silver screen, but more importantly off of it. Rest in power Chadwick Boseman.
